So Ford now wants to go the John Deere route.

John Deere runs a good flight department, if that is worth anything

It’s funny because Ford was historically one o f Deere’s biggest competito rs in tractor manufacturing.

Gotta separate the personal from the commercial side of things. On the commercial side, this is smart.

Remote fleet tracking is a yuuuuge business. Why wouldn’t Ford want to get in on that? If a c ompany owns 20 F150s, they want to be able to monitor their drivers to make sure nobody is speeding thru school zones and scaring the children, or otherwise driving like an asshat. They a lso need to make sure their drivers don’t stop for too long at the local bar or strip club.

It will also help with things like planning maintenance -5 trucks will be do for an oil change next week, better schedule service appointments, etc. Companies are already paying third parties to install additional hardware to do this, it will be easier if it’s built in.

I guess when they tout the F-150 being the #1 commercial truck, they indeed think of the commercial truck, as in the TV commercial truck that’s pretty and pristine. I don’t think the landscapers running around in  flogged  F-150's are really going to get excited about *optimized route planning!*

Boo! I was planning on building my dream Bronco to the exact spec I want once there are some in junkyards, and methinks this would make that a bit tricky.

I remember Ford fondly. They made fantastic cars and trucks. It’s really sad how they died that horrible death back in 1996, but they’ve been dead ever since. Yep, dead.

... I’m just not going to acknowledge the existence of Fords built past that date so I can always have a positive opinion of the brand.

Very true but much like manual transmissions the bulk of the new commercial business wants features like that. Manufacturers don’t care all that much about what the second, third or even fourth owners want in a vehicle it makes them zero money. Besides connectivity frustrating and silly as it sounds; is in some ways already been a thing in real commercial (like class 8’s) trucks for some time now where they can even message ahead to the nearest Dealer for an appointment if an issue comes up on the road. Does this benefit you and I? Not really but from a business perspective it definitely helps a decently sized fleet manage their bottom line more effectively.

Now,,,I don’t like this digital world all that much either the impending  death of physical media being one of my biggest fears but we’re a minority now

Yeah, but it was a lot better looking than the third gen Taurus, and you could still get a proper  SHO.

I still feel like they didn’t know w ha t they were doing when they sold out to Fiat... CNH is arguably 2nd Gorilla to JD, but even with all the recent mergers, tractors are still a market where there’s plenty of vibrant  com petition... CNH still makes the bigger/nicer New Holland machines in Ford’s old B ritish factories.
